Supporting and Retaining Effective Principals

Equitable access to effective school principals is critical to teacher and student success. As states develop their equity plans to improve students’ access to highly effective teachers and leaders, they should carefully consider the policies and practices that can support and retain great school leaders. This policy snapshot provides an overview of the limited research on principal impact and the influences on principals’ career paths, and then identifies potential strategies that states should consider to reduce principal turnover.
